Diary of a Student

Dear Diary,

There certainly is no rest for the wicked, it’s the fifth week of the term and already teachers  are killing us with work. Who would have thought that doing four subjects instead of nine would have been so difficult? My choice of French, History and Geography is certainly very challenging but they are subjects that I enjoy.

My holidays were wonderful. I visited so many different places in Trinidad and Tobago that I had not even heard about before. The Asa Wright Nature Centre for example, located in the Northern Range, was a real adventure. Right in this area one will encounter squirrels, cuckoos, toucans, and all types of other species that fly in plain view at the front of the building. Tufted coquettes and various species of hummingbirds feeding on the foliage from the back gallery, is but a start of what the birder will find at the Centre. Botanists and entomologists and other naturalists will find the experience just as enriching. It is indeed one of the most outstanding ecotourism centers of the world and was featured in 1999 in AUDUBON magazine, a premiere international ecotourism magazine.

Apart from the Centre, I also paid a visit to the La Brea Pitch Lake which is truly a natural phenomenon. It was discovered by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1595 while he was searching for gold and he used it to mend the caulking of his ships. It is the largest pitch lake in the world and visitors take advantage of the sulphur pools which are said to be fountains of youth.

Although the surface of the lake is solid enough to walk on, the area is in constant motion. A hole dug into the asphalt one day is refilled the next.

To be continued...
